I attended the Eastside democratic Club (not part of the Democratic Party) meeting last Tuesday at which Emory Mott spoke about the mission and actions of the PIRC in support of the immigrant community of Oregon.
May 1 was workers rights day. In some countries, it is a holiday where worker’s get together to celebrate their accomplishments. In the United States, we have a lot of work to do. We need to ask what our country can do for us or all we will get is poverty and war.
May 1, 2026, I volunteered as a medic with PCUN, Oregon farmworkers Union. It was my first time working with them. Hundreds of people showed up to March and it was very successful. However I heard that Tina Kotek, the current Oregon Governor, made PCUN endorse her in order for PCUN able the hold their rally and march. Tina Kotek, last month, signed the bill 4018, that destroyed campaign finance reform and put in loopholes, including some loopholes that have never been seen before, effectively destroying campaign finance reform. When Tina Kotek approached the podium to speak I booed her and yelled what about campaign finance reform (She needs to veto HB4018 which was enacted by the legislature with the purpose of gutting the limits on campaign contribution, limits which were just enacted during the last legislative session) several times as loud as I could and was very animated. I was surprised no one tackled me! Yay for free speech!! Free speech still exists in Oregon for now. Make the income tax truly progressiveOregon supposedly has a progressive income tax structure on individuals. However, the lowest bracket starts be applied on the first dollar that an individual earns. For single individuals the structure is
$0 – $4,300 4.75% $4,301 – $10,750 6.75% $10,751 – $125,000 8.75% Over $125,000 9 .9% I propose that a much more progressive tax structure would be to eliminate the $0 - $4,300 bracket and to add a new bracket to tax individually with a millionaire income. That bracket should be 10.9% The new individual income tax brackets would be $4,301 – $10,750 6.75% $10,751 – $125,000 8.75% $125,000 - $1 million 9.9% Over $1 million 10.9% I could consider other rates but the elimination of the lowest bracket and a new bracket on millionaire income is a firm proposal. |
